Original Pieces Of Art
My Interpretations

Artist Statement
The piece of art I will be observing today is as piece from my three series work inspired by an artist. This artwork was composed of plaster, cardboard, and paint. The colors used are black, burgundy, various shades of gray, white, and some purple. The figure made out of plaster is in the form of a human face. Half of the face is painted black, and the other is painted using the rest of the colors described above. The face is connected to a cardboard is a painted profile of a human. The Color scheme is the same as the facial form, but with a little less textured and more smooth. The piece was made to be an interpretation of Januz Miralles painting. This artist is well known for his "ghostly" painting style of mostly female figures. This piece was my sculptural interpretation of his painting. I was drawn to this piece of art because of the simplicity but ravishing beauty it expresses. I connected with the emotions i received from the picture and just could take my eyes away. I interpret it as a woman or a girl who is hiding in the shadows. In the original the head is not complete, so I think that could mean that neither is the subject in the picture. There is definitely a mood of darkness, but also a sense of misplacement, or wandering. Overall I loved the original piece and am proud of my cardboard painting. The mask was not ideal and didn't work out as I had hoped it would. This piece is very much my style, and would hang it up in my house in a heartbeat.
My next piece is another from my inspired artist series of three. This piece is made of just plaster and paint, and is again in the form of a human face. THe colors used are black, gray, pink, white, orange, red, green, purple, blue, turquoise, and yellow. The sculpted form had been painted with closed eyes, eyebrows, and the upper half of a human face realistically. The lower half is a mix of wild colors and almost seem as if the face is melting into these colorful streaks. Line is prominently used in this artwork for the streaks as well as for the facial features. Contrast in color and shade is displayed as well. This piece was originally just a painting on a piece of paper, but I displayed and interpreted the original piece to my own on a facial mold. I was drawn to this painting because of the emotions expressed and the feelings that you could just feel while looking at it. I felt sympathy, distressed, but a sense of calmness. It seemed to me that the woman in the painting was melting away, as if she had given so much or has been burning out for a while now. The calmness I see is the fact that she is melting, the her fears and all her worries, and the world's expectations of her are just melting away and somehow she is being freed. It is like If her face completely melted that, then her soul would be released and she would be free and have no more pain or suffering. I did not do such a great job at expressing these same emotions through my project, but I enjoy the pop of color I added in to the painting. Overall I like this piece, but would much rather have the original.
My last Piece in this three part series is made up of Plaster, cardboard, paint, and lots of glue. The piece involves the colors red, white, pink, burgundy, black, a tan-ish color, and a little bit of gray. The Facial sculpture for this piece is a little different than the rest. The face has cardboard pieces attached to it. The facial figure is attached to the cardboard piece where I drew the torso of a girl and had a mix of red toned colors surrounding the mask. The face is abstract in color, but the lips are a semi-realistic feature. This piece expresses the emotions of fear, pain, and weirdness. I must admit this piece of art is very odd and strange, but that is why I like it. When I first saw the original I thought well that is a very beautiful contrast in colors and I love how simplistic it is. But, when I started to create this piece of art I knew that i wanted to do more with it. I turned a creative eye towards it and did my own thing while keeping the main highlights the same. I interpret this piece as a girl who is being clouded by the suffering and pain, but also the love and boldness within this world. I imagined myself as this girl and I related it to whenever we see the news and all that is surrounding us in the world today, the girl is so caught up in the horrific things happening and so confused that she is falling and being clouded by this dark, or red midst. Red can be a color of love, and boldness, But it can also be used to show pain and shame. I Think this piece shows more of a bold and pain aspect to it. This is an unusual girl whose mind is being clouded with all the things around her. I liked this piece a lot but overall it is not my favorite.
