Artist Statement
For this project I was instructed to create a series of three. I was given no limits on where my creation could take me, but I had to create a bowl, a cylinder, and an experimental figure. To start this project I created a series of sketches and essentiely let my mind purge onto my paper. I had a difficult time choosing what I wanted my theme to be exactly and how I wanted to go about expressing my idea. I came to the realization that all of my ideas had to do with nature, and more specifically the ocean. I created my fist item, "The Shell", with the intention to create a bowl that had delicate and interesting designs engraven on its surface. While creating "The shell" half of my wall collapsed, taking what I have learned from the various art teachers I have had my entire education I decided to work with my mistakes. I extracted the collapsing clay from my sculpture and moved forward. In the end "The shell" has turned into my experimental project. Next, I created my cylinder figure, "My Ocean". The inspiration behind this piece was a vacation I had taken to California. While visiting this Golden State, I was able to experience connections with nature I had never experienced before. My last structure was my bowl figure which I named "Roots" after its inspiration from a tree sump and the roots it constantly is growing outward.
