Artist Inspired Mask Painting
Artist Statement
The First step to this Mask building process, was finding an artist who inspired me. The artist I ended up choosing was Claude Oscar Monet. I chose Monet due to previous experiences I have had with his artwork. My mother is a huge fan of his impressionistic artwork, and I had the opportunity a few summers ago to visit the CIA ( Chicago Institute of Art). At the Chicago Institute of Art there was a whole room dedicated to just Claude Monet's gallery of Art. It was amazing to be able to get up close and personal with such a famous individuals work. Impressionist style is like a light dotting with the paintbrush that ends up creating an image. Seeing his up close an personal brushstrokes made me really understand how much time and effort went into these paintings.
I created the bases/ form of my mask using plaster and a model head to create the features. It was an interesting process having to work with plaster for the first time. The plaster was difficult for me to smooth and create an even canvas for my paint. My next step, was choosing a painting of Claude Monet's many works. I chose this Painting because of the beautiful fall colors and the scenery it demonstrated. Being the beginning of the school year I would do anything to be in a place like this right now. Surrounding myself with nature and a silence that I can't achieve at home.
This art is a representation to me of peace and relaxation. The fall colors show a developing time, and the water represent a sense of cleanliness. This picture creates a different meaning to me every time I see it. At this moment it is representing a new beginning and becoming something else. The leafs will fall and the water will rise, wiping the slate clean for new things to come. The original piece of art I believe was supposed to be a representation of Monaco. I watched a movie this summer about Grace Kelly and her process of becoming the princess of Monaco. The artwork brought up my past experience with this movie and what I know about Monaco. Monaco now just comes with the message of strength and the power of women for me. Overall I love this piece of art and don't think I did enough justice to the original painting, but I put my heart in it and I think Claude Monet would be proud of that .
